Last year for my birthday, my good friend Ashley who lives in London sent me the Hummingbird Bakery Cookbook. She said it was this great cupcake place near her flat (she is American, but talks oh so British now 🙂 ) that was gaining a lot of popularity in England. Despite the recipes looking amazing, I was too lazy to figure out all of the conversions from grams to cups (I know, what a lame excuse), so I still haven’t made anything from the cookbook.
Nonetheless when it came time to plan my trip to visit Ashley, we of course had to put a stop at Hummingbird Bakery on the list, espeically with the start of Bakery Bingo! We went to the Wardour Street location, which is conveniently just off Oxford Street where lots of shopping takes place. Since it was the day before July 4th, to my delightful surprise they had tons of cupcakes decorated to celebrate the USA! I like this place already 🙂
There were so many tasty options to choose from! Several cupcake flavors, including Red Velvet, Carrot, and Black Bottom Cupcake (dark chocolate cake with cheesecake baked in!), plus brownies, cakes, and even whoppie pies!

I was told that I really should try the Chocolate Cupcake, that is topped with tons of chocolate sprinkles. It was incredible! Light and moist devil’s food cake, with creamy and rich chocolate buttercream frosting, and a nice crunch from the sprinkles. For a self-proclaimed chocoholic like myself, this was perfect.
It looked too delicious to even stop and take a picture first, so I had to get this one, courtesy of the Hummingbird Bakery’s website.
This is the picture I did manage to get – the remaining bits that were stuck to the wrapper…
We also decided to do the American thang and get a July 4th themed cupcake. It was fluffy vanilla sponge cake with light buttercream frosting, topped with red, white and blue sugar stars!
Every bite of these cupcakes was so good. Definitely add it to your list if you go to London! Yeah, it’s a giant city and there are a ton of things to see, but these cupcakes will be worth the trip, promise.
So good in fact, I am finally going to suck it up and convert some metric-system recipes! I’m thinking first up will be the Black Bottom Cupcakes described above and Lavender Cupcakes, with lavender-infused cake and lavender frosting. So stay tuned! 🙂
