My lovely little Bakery Bingo blog started just eight months ago with a trip to NYC. I was determined to visit Baked, a café/bakery owned by the writers of my all-time favorite cookbook, Baked: New Frontiers in Baking. It was a long trek to Brooklyn, given that we didn’t have a car and taxis did not seem to want to pick us up apparently. (Read more about our NYC Bakery Crawl here). But after about an hour journey we made it! And it was well worth the trip, especially for their incredibly delicious Brooksters – a perfect combo of brownie and chocolate chip cookie. (Hence people also calling this creation the “Brookie.”)
My Pastry Mission: Nuvrei Cafe
404 NW 10th Ave & Flanders • nuvrei.com • 503.972.1700
Hours: Mon-Sat 7am-5pm; Sun 8am-5pm
I’ve been trying to come up with a clever intro to this blog post about Nuvrei’s new cafe in the Pearl District, some story that is catchy and enthralling. Sadly though the best I could come up with was a lead-in about how while watching the amazing movie of my youth, Titanic (yes, I was truly watched the whole thing as “research” for our trivia night), Leo’s adorable character of Jack Dawson talks about traveling to “Pair-ee” and the artsy scene there. When I think of Paris, all I think about however is the delicious patisseries filled with incredible fresh-based breads and pastries. For those in Portland, consider yourself lucky, now thanks to Nuvrei’s cafe, you don’t have to travel all the way across the Atlantic to get an amazing patisserie experience.
Worth the Wait: Tasty n Sons
3808 N Williams Ave & NE Failing St • 503.621.1400 • tastynsons.com
I have been dying to try out brunch at Tasty n Sons for quite some time. Finally I convinced some friends this morning that it would be worth the wait for a table! Fortunately the food was just as incredible as I was told, so it was definitely worth it!
We arrived around 9:15am and were told it would be about an hour. After somewhat impatiently waiting, we got seated near their open kitchen. The menu is filled with so many incredible options – all very different and unique, and all sounded fantastic. There were so many choices, I could barely narrow it down. Ok, in fact, I didn’t – I ended up getting two entrees with a friend instead. I mean check out some of these items:
