According to my husband Brice, one of the best things about having a cook at his fraternity house in college was that she made great dessert. No, he sadly wasn’t a dessert lover back then either. It was that the college girls, I guess myself included, were much more inclined to stop by. Their cook Jody in particular made some really delicious baklava. Making this Mediterranean dessert was much more fun than just eating some cookies out of a box (though she did make awesome chocolate chip cookies too, I remember), so whenever it was made, all the girls were excited to head to the Delta Sig house. Sure, the boys thought it was for them, but truth be told, it was merely the thought of that tasty baklava.

I’ve been trying to come up with a clever intro to this blog post about Nuvrei’s new cafe in the Pearl District, some story that is catchy and enthralling. Sadly though the best I could come up with was a lead-in about how while watching the amazing movie of my youth, Titanic (yes, I was truly watched the whole thing as “research” for our trivia night), Leo’s adorable character of Jack Dawson talks about traveling to “Pair-ee” and the artsy scene there. When I think of Paris, all I think about however is the delicious patisseries filled with incredible fresh-based breads and pastries. For those in Portland, consider yourself lucky, now thanks to Nuvrei’s cafe, you don’t have to travel all the way across the Atlantic to get an amazing patisserie experience.

You know that feeling when it’s about 8 or 9pm and you really want a delicious dessert, perhaps to celebrate something great that happened that day or just because chocolate tastes great, but you just can’t think of where to go? Sure there is always the option of going to a restaurant and ordering off their dessert menu (which my husband Brice would like to remind me that it isn’t a bad idea if it involves a cookie pie!). But now us Portlanders have another option – the amazing Alder Pastry & Dessert which recently opened just off East Burnside!
