My mom and I have one of those relationships where we talk a lot. When work or travel get in the way and we don’t talk for 2 or 3 days, my mom usually answers my call with something like “it’s my long lost daughter!” It’s not like it really has been that long, but that’s how it feels when you are used to a more regular cadence. Brice has asked before what our conversations can possibly be about, talking that frequently. We chat about anything – traffic, her dogs, new recipes, work, politics (though that one usually ends up in a fight…). It doesn’t seem to matter the topic.
Fried Chicken (and Chickpeas!) and Fun: CHKCHK
1305 NW 23rd Ave & Overto • www.ChkChk.com • @chkchkpdx
Hours: Daily 11am-10pm
While I’m all about the fancy dinners with multiple courses, bottles of wine and table service (I mean, who doesn’t on occasion?!), that can only happen every so often. Most nights during the week, especially with this new crazy busy job, I just want something casual for dinner if I’m too lazy to cook for myself.
That is part 1 of why I was so excited about CHKCHK opening up just a few blocks from my place. A fast-casual, easy, fun restaurant with great food?! Heck yes. Seriously, the powers that be in the Pearl District, we need more places like that. No more $80 a person restaurants. We have enough. Definitely no more window shade stores. Bring on things like P’s & Q’s markets or Thrive Bowls, like North Portland has!
Thursday Tours: When I Come to PDX
My favorite part of trip planning is figuring out where to eat (like my current scheming for a trip to Santa Fe! Anyone have suggestions?!). I love doing a lot while traveling but really it’s almost all about the food for me. My suggestions will often be “first we go to this cafe for breakfast, then hit up this bakery, next late lunch here, then drinks at this cool bar, followed by dinner at this great restaurant.” The sight-seeing is sometimes just a way to work up an appetite for the next meal.
