Well hello summer! Welcome back! I missed you. Seriously, what was with that rain? Isn’t is supposed to be nice post-July 4th? That was what I was always taught growing up in Oregon!
Now that the sunshine is returning, how about celebrating with a picnic in the park? My friends clearly know I love the picnicing, since a few years ago they got me this awesome picnic basket that is part cooler, part tote, complete with silverware and plate. How tricked out is this? It even has wine glasses and a corkscrew. Amazing.
While I’ll be gallivanting around the Southwest US and Europe for 6 weeks of the summer, I sadly will not be partaking in a ton of picnicking around Portland. I’m a little bummed about that as Portland summers are quite possibly the best ever. But! Good news, I did find this awesome company called Prague Picnics that literally delivers you a basket in one of the Prague parks. I’m definitely going to hit that up when I’m there!
If you’ll be in Portland though, you’ve got a great set up with all the offerings from our specialty grocery stores and restaurants. Today for #ThursdayToursPDX, we’ve got Jannie of Little Green Pickle and Steve of Cartwhisperer sharing their favorite picnic spots.
Jannie is not only a stunning food photographer, but she is also a professionally trained chef and half of the power couple that started Little Green Pickle, the local food PR company, and Feast Portland. All that to say, she knows her stuff when it comes to food. Plus she’s a whole lot of fun, so all in all, a great picnic buddy to have.
Don’t forget to head to Martha Chartreuse next for more recommendations!

Picnic Outing Recommendations by Jannie of Little Green Pickle
I like easy things. Already made sandwiches that can be cut and shared. Meats, cheese and wine is also a must. I come from an Asian family that always had about 8 dishes to choose from every night. So naturally a smörgåsbord board of sandwiches, fish, meats, cheese and wine is perfect!
Bowery Bagels
The Sarah’s Special on a toasted onion bagel. It is such an easy thing to bring! I love sandwiches. Bagels just make them better.
Providore
Providore has all your picnic needs. Their cheese selection has all my favorites. I’m a huge fan of quadrello di bufala cheese and anything from Jasper Hill. Perfect for picnics. Not too stinky, but just stinky enough. Don’t forget your baguette from Little T Baker! The meat selection is lovely as well. Easy pickings and sharing for everyone. No meat no meal! Not to mention they have a great selection of wines to pick up.
City Market
Oh goodness. More sandwiches. That Italian Stallion hits the spot. I would just get one to share for two. Every time I go they are making their bourbon chicken liver mousse and man it is just an easy sell as it smells so good. City Market also has a great selection of meats and cheeses.
Coquine
Two words. Porchetta sandwich. Chef Katy Millard makes everything perfectly, but there is something about that porchetta sandwich. The thin slices, the crispy pork skin surprises within. I love every bite.
Poke Mon
Soon to be officially open {they are in soft opening phase now}, but what better and easy way to picnic by having a poke bowl to bring to a picnic. Light and healthy and perfectly delicious. Pick anything on the menu. It’s poke!

I need to try that Coquine Porchetta sandwich! At Bowery, it’s always a 50-50 toss up for me between the Sarah’s Special and the Oliver Lent with sweet caramelized onions and melty gruyere and egg that keeps longer if it’ll be a while before I eat it, I don’t like warm gravlax.

Love the idea to bring Poke to a Picnic! I can’t wait to give Poke Mon a try!
