Good Food Here food carts at SE 43rd & Belmont • sweetpeasbrulee.com
Stop #2 along our bakery crawl took place at the Good Food Here food cart pod. I had heard about a little place called Sweet Pea’s Brulee, which serves homemade crème brulee… from a food cart… This I had to try. Their menu was filled with lots of tasty options, all of which are housemade: salted caramels, S’mores with handcrafted marshmallows, their own Sweet Pea’s Fudgesicle, and a selection of crème brulees with rotating flavors like coffee cream or the traditional vanilla using their own Tahitian vanilla extract (yes, they seriously have their own handmade unfiltered vanilla bean extract). I decided to go with the Marshmallow Topped Crème Brulee, their traditional vanilla flavor topped with their homemade marshmallow (it was as incredible as it sounds).
Kim, one of the two owners, was manning the cart that day. She grabbed a small foil ramekin from the fridge and a butane torch from the counter and went to work – first she caramelized the top of the crème brulee. Then she placed one of their vanilla marshmallows on top of the crème brulee and browned that using the torch as well, until it reached a beautiful crisp.
While my delicious dessert was being prepared, Kim told me that she and her husband make the custard bases every morning, bake them in water baths, then package them up and transport them to their food cart to delight customers like me.
I excitedly took my crème brulee to our picnic table, picked up my spoon and broke into the dessert with not one, but two cracks – first through the crispy marshmallow then through the burnt sugar topping. The result was out of this world – rich, creamy and perfect variants of texture. It will bring back memories of a wonderful summer night around the campfire mixed with a romantic dinner out.
Everyone on our birthday crawl agreed that this was the big winner of the day. The Fudgesicle was chocolately goodness, all flavors of the crème brulee were awesome, and Kim even offered me a free salted caramel for my birthday. Even if you don’t like crème brulees (and I’m not sure how that’s possible if you have one like Sweet Pea’s), there is plenty there to enjoy, so head over ASAP.
