Good Food Here food carts at SE 43rd & Belmont • fifty-licks.com
Stop #3 along our bakery crawl was Fifty Licks Ice Cream, which was a happily unexpected stop (as The Sugar Cube which was our original third destination was closed for a private event). Fifty Licks is another awesome spot to check out in the Good Food Here food cart pod (I am quickly realizing that location is one-stop shopping for tasty desserts!).
Given that the day of our tour de dessert was about 95 degrees, I was beyond excited to get some ice cream. More excitement came when I noticed their sign that read “Ice Cream Tacos!” Whatever that was, I wanted one. The friendly girl working high up in the Fifty Licks truck answered my question by telling me to “first go over to the Euro Trash food cart right behind you and he’ll make you a waffle ‘taco’ then come back over here and we’ll load it up with the ice cream of your choosing.” Sounded pretty great to me.
So I walked the three feet over to Euro Trash and ordered my waffle. While the Euro Trash manager was making my next birthday treat, he told me what makes their freshly made waffle so great: “LOTS of butter and a sprinkling of sugar.” Yes, that combo usually does make anything delicious!
Once ready I took the perfectly browned waffle back over to Fifty Licks and got it piled up with two giant scoops of their Coconut Lemon Saffron Sorbet. I ate it just like a taco and it was fantastic – the warm waffle was the perfect compliment to the cold, creamy sorbet.
You really can tell their ice cream is handmade and uses high-quality local ingredients by the creamy textures and delicious flavors. So even if it isn’t 95 degrees out (because really, how many days do we get of those around here?), go grab yourself a Fifty Licks scoop of ice cream, or better yet an ice cream taco.
What to Get:
- Coconut Lemon Saffron Sorbet: An unusual list of ingredients for perhaps but this was super delicious. If you were just given a bite without knowing what it was, you would never guess it was a sorbet. It is creamy and sweet, and a great pick-me-up on a hot summer day.
Maple with Bacon: Seriously, it’s maple ice cream with bits of bacon inside it. Kind of crazy but then if you hear their analogy it makes sense – “imagine crispy bacon piled high over stacks of maple syrup drizzled pancakes.” Who doesn’t like that? Well now you can have it in ice cream form!
