Walking through the Orenco Station Farmer’s Market in mid-October is like walking through a storybook town. The lawns of the charming townhouses are buried beneath bright orange and yellow leaves. Pumpkins line the sidewalks and are sold from little red wagons. The farmer’s market is filled with adorable families wandering through to find the perfect heirloom tomato, fresh-cut sunflowers and, my favorite, various types of winter squash.
Among the numerous food and produce booths is Decadent Creations, a small-batch bakery owned by Mindy Huggins. Cakes, tarts and breads lined the blue and white table with a continuous line of customers. As I waited my turn, I kept overhearing people talk about how great this bakery is. One woman said she came the week prior and got the best quiche she’s ever had. The two in front of me were Decadent Creation regulars, frequenting the farmer’s market specifically for their treats.
Mindy and her bakery have come a long way, starting with just cupcakes. Now, her baked goodies can be found at the popular Beaverton Farmer’s Market and other markets in the area, with an expansive menu with everything from pastries to cheesecakes.
The Ocean Roll is particularly delicious. Made with croissant dough and rolled with cardamom and sea salt, it has a complex salty yet sweet flavor.
The fall-themed desserts are fun and unique. The Spooky Bun, a brioche stuffed with pumpkin pie filling made with pumpkin and Chantilly is a delight. And the Drunken Pumpkin Cake layered with rum ganache and candied hazelnut buttercream is a wonderful, adult-friendly addition to any dessert tray.
To get your pick of the pastry case, avoid sleeping in too late and hit up the market early before they sell out! You also need to hurry over before the drought of farmer’s markets occurs during the dark winter months ahead.
