Delicious pastries, fresh strawberries, sunshine – pretty much a perfect Saturday morning in my opinion.  I started the gorgeous day by wandering through the rows of Farmer’s Market booths, picking up some lemon cucumbers and a beautiful bouquet of flowers.  Once I got a little hungry, I knew it was a great opportunity to try a new bakery!  Everything on display at the Delphina’s Bakery booth looked incredible and I had seen their breads before but never tried them, so I thought it was a perfect place for my breakfast treats. Delicious Edible Art: Las Vegas’ Jean Philippe Patisserie

I spent the last few days in Las Vegas for a bachelorette party.  All of us had requests for the weekend –hitting up the shops at the Venetian, getting a Cosmo at the Cosmo (hotel), attending a pool party at Mandalay Bay… Of course, my request was to get to at least one incredible bakery.  While wandering through the giant, new complex of City Center, we came across Jean Philippe Patisserie and I knew .  You will want to be sure your camera is in hand to capture the edible artwork that lines the entrance to bakery – intricate sugar sculptures, giant architectural cake towers, and even high-heel shoes made out of chocolate.  The second Jean Philippe location in the Bellagio also boasts the world’s largest chocolate fountain.  Continue Reading...

I Can’t Believe It’s Not Gluten: New Cascadia Traditional

Some friends I trained for the Vancouver Marathon with invited me to go on a “bakery run” this past Saturday.  The plan would include starting at New Cascadia Traditional bakery, which is owned by another runner, then after our run we’d meet back at the bakery for post-run treats.  Duh, of course I was in.

New Cascadia was started by Chris and Teresa, the husband-and-wife team, after Chris found out he was gluten-intolerant.  They started experimenting with gluten-free baking at home, then in 2007 became a vendor at one of the local Farmer’s Markets.  With a growing loyal following, they opened their retail location in SE Portland.  Continue Reading...
