On a warm summer night, you really can’t beat a scoop of ice cream. Even better if it’s delicious handmade ice cream served on top of a homemade waffle cones or sandwiched between two freshly baked cookies. If you are thinking this sounds like a great idea, head to Ruby Jewel Scoop Shop in North Portland.
A few weeks ago when it was National Ice Cream Sandwich Day, I wrote a post about Ruby Jewel’s sandwiches which are sold in numerous grocery stores around the West Coast. Last night we finally checked out their retail location, the Scoop Shop. Definitely a good pick!
Once you walk by, you will be craving ice cream. The smell of fresh baked waffle cones permeates the sidewalk and will convince anyone to stop in. The inside has a great feel of a classy but welcoming ice cream shop with its large, open doors and modern architecture. They have a permanent menu of 5 flavors (including the amazing Caramel with Dark Salted Chocolate that is their claim-to-fame flavor), 2 vegan sorbet flavors and 5 rotating flavors. Plus they have homemade sauces like dulce de leche caramel sauce to top one awesome sundae. Last night they offered a Fluffer Nutter version which was peanut butter ice cream swirled with housemade marshmallow fluff. We had it as a sandwich between two Double Chocolate Cookies. It was as tasty as it sounds.
What to Get:
- Ice Cream Sandwiches
- Caramel with Salted Dark Chocolate Ice Cream: They were not kidding around when they said it was salted. It’s really salty. But super good. The sweetness of the creamy caramel ice cream is a perfect match for the giant chunks of salted chocolate. For a great combo, pair this with one of their homemade waffle cones.
- Any one of their rotating assortment of sorbets: Not icy like you usually think of sorbet, but creamy and sweet. Perfect for vegans or anyone else just not wanting full-dairy ice cream.
Other Facts:
- Hours: Sun-Thurs: 12-10pm; Fri-Sat: 12-11pm
- If you can’t make it out to the Scoop Shop, don’t forget about being able to pick up one of their pre-packed sandwiches at several locations around the West.
