Some friends I trained for the Vancouver Marathon with invited me to go on a “bakery run” this past Saturday.  The plan would include starting at New Cascadia Traditional bakery, which is owned by another runner, then after our run we’d meet back at the bakery for post-run treats.  Duh, of course I was in. 

The most amazing Vegan Margarita Cupcake

New Cascadia was started by Chris and Teresa, the husband-and-wife team, after Chris found out he was gluten-intolerant.  They started experimenting with gluten-free baking at home, then in 2007 became a vendor at one of the local Farmer’s Markets.  With a growing loyal following, they opened their retail location in SE Portland.  Continue Reading...

Over the years, I’ve realized I’m a stereotypical woman and really think miniature items are adorable (maybe it’s also because I’m only 5’1″ and it makes me feel better) – little baby gym shoes, miniature labradoodles, mini kitchen gadgets (like the mini Cuisinart Food Prep or a mini whisk).  And yes, I definitely love mini desserts (because then I can either feel less guilty or the better option of sampling more flavors)!  Luckily for me, just up the street a little ways is Two Tarts Bakery in NW Portland, which is seriously mini cookie heaven.  Continue Reading...

Food Should Be Fun: A few words about Thomas Keller

Thomas Keller has been showing up all over my life lately, it seems – in my interviews with both Jami Curl and Marc Frankel, during my trip to NYC, and featured in a book I recently finished, “Service Included: Four-Star Secrets of an Eavesdropping Waiter”.  For those who don’t know of Thomas Keller, he is a big time, world-renowned chef.  He has won numerous James Beard awards, including Best Chef in America (like the Oscars for chefs).  He is the only American-born chef to hold multiple three-star ratings from the Michelin Guide, receiving seven in 2011, primarily for his two restaurants – Per Se in New York and The French Laundry in Napa Valley.  So to sum it up, he is a pretty incredible chef.
